Iraq: Two security sources said that a military base in central Iraq housing army personnel and pro-Iran paramilitary forces was “bombed” on Friday night. The interior ministry official said one person was killed and eight others injured in the attack.
According to an interior ministry source and a military official, the explosion happened at the Calso base, where the former pro-Iran paramilitary group Hashd al-Shaabi – which has now joined the regular army – is deployed.
The military source said three Iraqi military personnel were injured. In a statement, Hashd al-Shaabi confirmed the attack had caused material damage and casualties, but did not specify the number of injured.
The ministry source said,”The explosion hit equipment, weapons and vehicles.” There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. The military official said,”The were explosions in the warehouses storing equipment.”
He added”A fire is still raging and the search for the injured is continuing.” Hashed al-Shaabi, an alliance of mainly Shiite armed groups formed to fight the Islamic State group, is now a part of Iraq’s security forces.
Amid rising regional tensions over the war between Israel and Tehran-backed Palestinian militants Hamas, the attack on the pro-Iran paramilitary forces comes.On Friday, Israel was blamed for attacks targeting a military base near Isfahan in Iran.
