10 Infants die in last 24 hours at Murshidabad Medical College hospital in Bengal; Probe ordered

Murshidabad: Concerns have spiked at the Murshidabad Medical College in West Bengal after ten newborns and a 2-year-old child died in 24 hours with cries of aggrieved parents and families. The deaths took place in the SNCU ward of the hospital on Thursday. According to the administration, a committee has already been formed to investigate the cause of death.

According to initial reports, lack of beds and medical staffers in the ward is the reason for the death of the infants. The Medical College Principal said a committee has been constituted to probe the circumstances leading to the shocking deaths and action will be taken in case of negligence.

The SNCU ward comprises 52 beds but saw a rush of patients with a whopping 100 ailing newborns getting admitted after they were referred there by private hospitals in the district. The hospital administration said that three of those ten were born in Murshidabad Medical College Hospital. Others were referred from subdivisions in critical condition. It is alleged that private medical facilities refer newborns to the medical college whenever their condition deteriorates and the doctors there are unable to diagnose correctly.

According to sources, the college authorities also claimed that all the children are being referred to the medical college due to the renovation of the SNCU ward at Jangipur Super Specialty Hospital. The sudden rush of infants saw the medical college accommodating three on each bed while the staffers and doctors scrambled to provide them with adequate treatment.
