10-year-old girl from Punjab dies of suspected food poisoning soon after eating her birthday cake

Chandigarh: In a shocking turn of events, a ten-year-old girl in Punjab’s Patiala died due to suspected food poisoning after she ate her birthday cake, her family alleged. According to the family, the girl Manvi and her sister fell ill on the night after they celebrated her birthday and ate the cake which was ordered online.

In a video that doing rounds on social media, the girl named Manvi is seen cutting the cake and celebrating with her family just hours before her death.

She cut the cake around 7 PM on March 24, by 10 PM the same night, the entire family fell sick, her grandfather Harban Lal said, adding that the sisters started vomiting soon after. Manvi asked for water, expressing extreme thirst and complaining of dryness in her mouth, he said. Afterwards, she went to sleep, he added.

In the aftermath, a video of the birthday celebrations showed the girl being fed the cake by her family members. Afterwards, at around 3 am, the children started vomiting and they were taken to a nearby hospital, said Manvi’s grandfather.

At the hospital, the doctors declared Manvi dead. Her younger sister possibly survived because she vomited, said her family.

The family has accused the bakery owner of mixing poisonous substances in the chocolate cake ordered from ‘Cake Kanha’. Authorities have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the bakery owner. He said, “The postmortem of the body has been done. A sample of the cake has been sent for testing. We are waiting for the results.”

An FIR has been registered based on a complaint filed by Manvi’s family. The family has sought action by the Health Department against those who made the cake. Meanwhile, the place from where the delivery person picked up the cake denied that it was delivered from there. Police said they are investigating the source of the cake.
