At least two people were killed and 16 others injured when a train derailed north of Cairo in Egypt on Tuesday, media reported, citing the Egyptian Ministry of Health. The Egyptian Ministry of Transport said in a statement that the train collided with the platform of a railway station in Qalyub. According to a media report, around 20 ambulances have been dispatched to the scene to assist the injured.
Egypt’s Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir has ordered the formation of a committee to investigate the cause of the train derailment and identify those responsible and assess the damage.
According to earlier government statements, 32 people were killed and 84 others were injured when two trains collided in Egypt in 2021. According to CNN, 36 ambulances were dispatched to assist people in the incident in Tahta district of Upper Egypt’s governorate of Sohag.
The Egyptian Railways Authority said in a statement that the collision occurred after an unknown person applied the emergency brake. Officials had said that a train going from Aswan to Cairo collided with the rear of a train going from Luxor to Alexandria, which got stuck on the railway line due to emergency braking.
