New Delhi: India has won the third gold medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022. 20-year-old Achinta Sheuli won this medal in the 73 kg weightlifting men’s weight category. Achinta Sheuli lifted a record 143 kg in snatch, while he managed to lift 170 kg in clean and jerk. Overall, he lifted a total of 313 kg and won the gold medal, setting a Games record.

After the win, Achinta said that I am very happy. I have won this medal after overcoming many struggles.I will dedicate this medal to my brother and coaches. After that I will prepare for the Olympics.
Eri Hidayat Muhammad of Malaysia, who gave a tough fight to Sheuli, finished as the second best lifter in the event. He put in a best effort of 303 kg (138 kg 165 kg).Canada’s Shad Darsigny finished third with a total weight of 298 kg (135 kg (163 kg).
Sheuli, a junior World Championships silver medalist, executed three clean lifts – 137kg, 140kg and 143kg – in the snatch category. His 143kg effort helped him break the Games record and improve his personal best.
With Sheuli’s gold, the Indian weightlifting contingent secured its sixth medal of the Games. Earlier in the day, 19-year-old Jeremy Lalrinnunga won the gold medal in the men’s 67kg category.
India has six medals so far
India has won all the six medals in weightlifters at Commonwealth Games so far. Earlier, Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Mirabai Chanu had won gold in the 49 kg weight category. At the same time, Jeremy Lalrinnunga won the gold medal for India in the 67 kg weight category. Sanket Mahadev Sargar and Bindiyarani Devi also won silver medals in the women’s 55kg category in the women’s 55kg category. Apart from this, Gururaja Pujari was successful in winning bronze medal in 61 kg weight category
Excellent career so far
Hailing from West Bengal, Chinta Sheuli had won a silver medal in the 73kg category of the Junior World Weightlifting Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan last year. In the 73kg category, national champion Achinta sheuli lifted a total of 313 kg (141 kg snatch and 172 kg clean and jerk) to claim the silver medal.
Then Achinta-Sheuli won the gold medal in the 73 kg weight category of the Commonwealth Championship in December 2021 and got a ticket to Birmingham. In that event, Achinta topped the podium by lifting a total of 316 kg. Achinta had also managed to win the gold medal in the 2019 Commonwealth Championship.
