2012 Chhawala Rape Case: SC acquits 3 accused on death sentence for 19-year-old rape and murder

New Delhi: The Supreme Court acquitted three accused on Monday in Chhawla Rape Case in 2012. Three was accused of gangraping and killing him with a 19-year-old girl. On 7 April, the Supreme Court had reserved the verdict on the death of the three convicts.

On 7 April, the Supreme Court had reserved the verdict on the death of the three convicts.A Delhi court had sentenced the accused to death after they were convicted of raping and murdering a 19-year-old girl in the case.

Considering this decision right, the Delhi High Court also upheld the death sentence. After this, an appeal was made in the Supreme Court against the punishment on behalf of the convicts. This case is related to the abduction and rape of a 19-year-old girl from Pauri, Uttarakhand. After raping the girl, the culprits put acid in her eyes.

In February 2014, a Delhi court sentenced three men to death for raping and murdering a 19-year-old girl in 2012.

The accused had challenged this sentence in the Delhi High Court. Subsequently, on 26 August 2014, the Delhi High Court also upheld the death sentence, saying that they were ‘hunters’ who were roaming the streets and were ‘looking for prey’.

The three men, Ravi Kumar, Rahul and Vinod, were convicted under various charges related to kidnapping, rape and murder. After this, an appeal was made in the Supreme Court against the punishment on behalf of the convicts.

Significantly, this case dates back to February 2012, when the body of a 19-year-old girl was found in Haryana. After the rape, she was brutally murdered. A case was registered in this regard at Chhawla (Najafgarh) police station in outer Delhi. According to the prosecution, the crime was brutal in nature as they first kidnapped, raped, murdered her and then dumped her body in a field in Rodai village in Haryana’s Rewari district.
