21-year-old PhD Scholar in Bengaluru dies by suicide; IISc mourns demise

21-year-old Diamond Kushwaha, who is a resident of Delhi, was a second year student of an Integrated PhD in Chemical Sciences from the Institute's Solid State and Structural Chemistry unit. He allegedly jumped from the sixth floor of the hostel building within the IISc campus, police said, as per a report by sources.

Bengaluru: A 21-year-old integrated PhD student at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru died by suicide by jumping from the sixth floor of the boys’ hostel on the campus. The incident happened at around 7.10 am on Friday. The reason for the same is yet to be unclear. The incident has shocked the staff and students of the IISc, and the institute paid condolences to the family of the deceased.

21-year-old Diamond Kushwaha, who is a resident of Delhi, was a second year student of an Integrated PhD in Chemical Sciences from the Institute’s Solid State and Structural Chemistry unit. He allegedly jumped from the sixth floor of the hostel building within the IISc campus, police said, as per a report by sources.

The students swiftly rushed him to a nearby hospital but despite of several efforts he was pronounced dead. His body was shifted to MS Ramaiah Memorial Hospital mortuary.

Sadashivanagar police registered a case of unnatural death. They informed the parents of the student about his extreme decision. The police said that the body of the student would be handed over to them after post-mortem which would be conducted upon their arrival in Bengaluru.

IISc Bengaluru expressed grief in a condolence letter, “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of a student, who was pursuing Integrated PhD at the Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit (SSCU), by suicide on 1 December 2023. We express our heartfelt condolences to the student’s family and friends. We are committed to ensuring that the IISc campus is a safe and inclusive space for everyone.”
