Malappuram: So far 21 people, mostly children, were killed when a houseboat carrying about 30 passengers capsized near Tuvalathiram beach in Tanur area of ​​Malappuram district in Kerala on Sunday evening. Expressing grief over the accident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a compensation of two lakh rupees each to the families of the deceased.

PM Modi has also tweeted about this incident, he has written in his tweet – “I am hurt by the death of people in the boat accident in Malappuram, Kerala. Condolences to the bereaved families. An ex-gratia amount of two lakh rupees from PMNRF will be provided to the next of kin of each deceased.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan issued a statement condoling the deaths and directed the Malappuram District Collector to carry out a coordinated emergency rescue operation. Fire and police units, officials from revenue and health departments and local people of Tanur and Tirur areas of the district are involved in the rescue operation, the statement said. It has also been said that ministers Abdurrahiman and Riyas will coordinate the rescue operation.

At the same time, Kerala’s Tourism Minister PA Mohammed Riyas has also expressed grief over this incident. After getting the information about the incident, he said that especially children are among those who lost their lives in this accident. According to the information being received, the incident took place when the children were riding a houseboat during the school holidays. Still many children are reported missing, for whose search a special campaign is also being conducted.
