23 Dead, 4 missing, several injured as massive tornado and strong thunderstorms ripped across Mississippi

Mississippi: At least 23 people were killed and dozens were injured when a tornado and severe thunderstorms struck Mississippi late Friday night. The state’s Emergency Management Agency said the tornado left a trail of damage more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) wide. This information has been given in a report by the news agency Reuters.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said in a series of tweets that four people were missing as search and rescue crews searched for survivors after a tornado devastated Silver City, a town of 200 people in western Mississippi.

Referring to the number of dead, the agency said, “Unfortunately these numbers are expected to change.”

Sources reported that search and rescue teams were outside the city of Rolling Fork, a town of 1,700 people. He saw the devastation caused by the tornado.

Brandi Shoah told sources, “I’ve never seen anything like this before. It was a very small town, and now it’s over.”

Shoah told the network that his grandmother’s house had been damaged.

Shoah said, “My friend was trapped in her house between some houses, but we got her out.

Todd Terrell, president of the United Cajun Navy, told ABC News that there was “a lot of destruction” in Rolling Fork and many people were trapped in their homes. His group is a team of volunteer rescue workers.

Terrell compared the destruction to the 2011 tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri, which killed 161 people.

At least 24 reports of tornadoes Friday night and Saturday morning were issued by storm watchers and observers to the National Weather Service. These reports are from the western edge of the Mississippi north to the center of the state and Alabama.

Pictures of the destruction published by media networks showed entire buildings reduced to rubble. Cars overturned and people were seen climbing on the debris in the dark.

Governor Tate Reeve said in a tweet, “Many people in MS Delta need your prayers and God’s protection tonight.”
