2,500 cops deployed in Mumbai ahead of two separate rallies by ruling and opposition parties

Mumbai, the financial capital of the country, will witness two rallies today, one of which was organised by Maha Vikas Aghadi's (MVA), 'Halla Bol' protest against the Maharashtra government, and the other march is set to be organised by the ruling ally.

Mumbai: Mumbai, the financial capital of the country, will witness two rallies today, one of which was organised by Maha Vikas Aghadi’s (MVA), ‘Halla Bol’ protest against the Maharashtra government, and the other march is set to be organised by the ruling ally.

Over time, security has been strengthened. Over 2,500 police personnel have been deployed all over Mumbai to stop any untoward incident in the city, officials said.

Overall, 317 police officers, 1,870 constables, 22 platoons of the State Reserve Police Force, and at least 30 squads of Riot Control Police are pressed on duty to  maintain law and order, he said.

The opposition leaders of Shiv Sena, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Congress are on the road against the ‘insult; of the two icons of the state, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Jyotiba Phule. The opposition is united on a single platform, including the “atrocities” being perpetrated against Marathi speakers in the neighbouring state of Karnataka. Apart from these industrial projects being taken out of the state and “injustice” meted out to Maharashtra.

NCP patriarch Sharad Pawar is expected to join MVA’s ‘Halla Bol’ Morcha today. He is likely to address a rally at the conclusion of the protest.

According to state Congress president Nana Patole, the protest is a manifestation of people’s rage against the state government led by Shiv Sena and the BJP.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi’s (MVA) ‘Halla Bol’ protest is set to get underway near J J Hospital and will conclude at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in south Mumbai.

BJP’s Mumbai unit chief Ashish Shelar announced plans to organise a “Maafi Mango” protest in Mumbai on Saturday, demanding an apology from the MVA for “insulting” Dr B R Ambedkar and Hindu deities.
