3 Dead, 2 injured after passengers mowed down at Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada bus terminus

Vijayawada: In a tragic turn of events, a horrifying visuals captured on CCTV showing an Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation bus ramming into the platform and mowing down the people at the Vijayawada bus stand on Monday (November 6). The incident claimed three lives while two others sustained severe injuries.

However, all 24 passengers sitting inside the bus are safe. The incident was captured on CCTV which doing rounds on social media. An inquiry into the incident has been ordered.

According to the clip that captured on the CCTV installed there, an APSRTC AC Metro luxury bus, which was seen suspended at a place, moved forward slowly and rammed into the platform, breaking past the railing and crushing people. A woman who was crossing the path also became a victim in the incident which took place on platform number 12 of the Pandit Nehru bus station.

Chaos and panic created among passengers and they were seen running everywhere to save themselves.

Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to the deceased’s families.

Inquiry ordered
After learning about the incident, APSRTC vice-chairman and managing director Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao immediately rushed to the accident site and took stock of the situation. He said an inquiry has been ordered and stern action will be taken within 24 hours. Rao said, “Mishap might have occurred due to a technical glitch in the gearbox. Action would be initiated based on the inquiry report and RTC will bear the medical expenses of the injured.”

“The driver of the bus is around 60 years old. The vehicle is in fit condition and we are investigating whether it was a technical fault or driver error that led to the accident,” he added. Further probe into the matter is underway.
