3 Killed, one severely injured in mass shooting at Las Vegas university; Suspect 67-year-old professor

Las Vegas: In a shocking development, an armed assailant opened fire on the Las Vegas campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on the afternoon of December 6, 2023. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) has confirmed that the suspect has been located and is deceased. The exact number of casualties has not yet been disclosed, but officials have confirmed several victims.

According to a report by sources, the gunman who killed three at the University was a 67-year-old professor who had been rejected for a job at the college, according to reports.

The incident occurred near Beam Hall, the administrative center of the university and a student union, prompting an immediate response from the university police. LVMPD has urged the public to avoid the area as they continue their investigation. This tragic event occurs just a few miles from the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival, where a deadly mass shooting occurred in 2017.

Alerts went out across the campus after callers reported an active shooter to police at 11:45 a.m., said Adam Garcia, a university police official. He said officers found and “engaged” a suspect, who is now dead. It was not immediately clear how the suspect died. Students and professors on the campus of 30,000 barricaded themselves inside classrooms and dorm rooms.

In view of the incident, the University of Nevada and all other southern Nevada institutions were ordered to remain closed for the rest of Wednesday (local time). The police also closed multiple roads near the institution.

The White House has said that it is closely monitoring the emerging situation. These comments were shared by spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre, indicating the high-level attention being drawn to the incident. Meanwhile, Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas initiated a ground stop due to the airport’s runway being close to the shooting scene.

UNLV, a public university founded in 1957 and located just north of Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, hosts more than 25,000 undergraduate students and more than 4,200 graduate students. Beam Hall, which houses the university’s Lee Business School, and the Student Union were the sites of the alleged shooting.

The identity of the deceased suspect has not been released, and it is unclear how he died or whether other people were involved in the shooting. As the situation remains fluid, expect more updates from LVMPD and University Police soon.

In these challenging moments, the University and the greater Las Vegas community are united in our resolve to deal with this tragic event. As more details emerge, the collective focus turns to supporting the victims and their families and seeking justice for this horrific act.
