Common signs of breast cancer: A lump in the breast or a mass is a typical sign of breast cancer in both men and women. When cancerous cells multiply, it leads to the growth of an uneven mass of cells in the breast, which can be easily detected upon touching. In rare cases of breast cancer, there is no lump or uneven cell growth, which often results in a delay in detection and getting the treatment. Apart from the lump, some additional symptoms may also appear when suffering from this type of cancer. Knowing about these signs are equally essential to get tested for breast cancer at the earliest and start treatment to curb the growth of the abnormal cells before it begins spreading to other parts of the body. Here are the 5 other changes you need to notice in your breast from time to time.

Changes in skin texture

Breast cancer can also lead to a change in the skin texture of your breasts. It is caused due to inflammation lead by the growth of cancerous cells. This may also cause a change in the colour of the skin. The skin of your breasts may start appearing scaly around the nipple and areola and it may even appear thick in some parts. Even eczema and dermatitis in the breasts can also be a sign of a rare type of breast cancer.

​Nipple discharge

Any kind of discharge from the nipple is not normal. Generally, in the case of breast cancer, nipples discharge milky to yellow, green, or red colour fluid. If you are not breastfeeding and still your nipples discharge then consult your doctor immediately. Not all nipples discharges are caused due to cancer, but it is best to speak to the doctor once for surety. Other reasons for nipple discharge includes breast infections, a side effect of birth control pills and certain medical conditions like thyroid disease.

​Breast pain or nipple pain

Although breast cancer is painless, sometimes one might experience breast and nipple pain when suffering from this condition. This happens due to a change in texture which often increases the tenderness and can lead to pain and discomfort. It is best not to ignore these signs and consult your doctor to be sure about the reason for the discomfort.

​​ Redness and swelling

Breast cancer can also make your skin appear bruised and swollen like you have got hurt. The skin may appear red, purple or bluish depending on the severity of your condition. If you have not lately undergone any traumatic event that explains these bruises then consult your doctor. Along with bruising, look for signs of swelling in the breast as well. Change in the size of your both breasts also requires your attention.

​Nipple retraction or inversion

Breast cancer can cause changes in cells of your nipples that may cause them to invert or reverse inward. The change in the nipples often appear during ovulation and sometimes even during the menstrual cycle. If you notice any such changes consult your doctor.
