Belagavi: In a tragic incident in Karnataka’s Hulkunda village of Belagavi district, six devotees were killed while going to visit a temple in Savadatti town. The incident occurred when their pick-up van hit a tree. In the mishap, 16 people were injured, they were taken to nearby hospitals at Gokak and Ramdhurga, where they are currently being treated.
Five people were killed on the spot, and one person died on the way to the hospital.
All the deceased were from Hulkunda Village in Karnataka’s Belagavi district. They were identified as Hanumappa (25), Deepa (31), Kumari Saveetha (11), Maruthi (42), and Indra (24).
CM Basavaraj Bommai expressed shock over the untimely deaths of the devotees and condoled the bereaved families. CM Bommai has announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to each of the deceased’s families from the Chief Minister’s relief fund. Officials have been asked to take all essential measures for the injured.
The CM further added, “I talked to the members of the deceased family this morning.” The government is ready to take care of the treatment of the injured. An investigation order has been given regarding the accident.
The Superintendent of Police, Sanjeev Patil, said devotees had left for Yellama temple in Savadatti. They were travelling in a Mahindra pick-up van, which collided with a tree shortly after their journey got underway.
A case has been lodged at Kadakol police station in Ramdhurga.
