New Delhi: In Thailand, a train and a pickup truck crossing the track had a fierce collision. Eight people died in this fatal accident while four others were injured.
Thailand state railways said a goods train hit the truck at 2:20 a.m. Friday in Mueang district of Chachoengsao province.
The condition of one victim injured in the accident is said to be serious. According to the railway agency, the dead included three women aged 22, 55 and 64 and five men aged 18, 27, 55, 60 and 62.
The accident took place at an unauthorized level crossing and there was no automatic barrier to stop the vehicles when trains were approaching. The agency said that currently 693 unauthorized crossing points are being used along the national rail system.
Truck driver Vichai Ulek, 54, told authorities he saw the train coming and slowed down after hearing a warning horn, but passengers in the vehicle told him to move on. Railway Authority said,
Let us tell you that the truck was taking the workers to Laem Chabang in Chonburi province. A passenger said that despite hearing the train horn three times, the driver did not stop.
At the same time, the Railways said that it has tried to reduce the possible accidents by installing warning signs and radiums on both sides of the crossing.
