As of 7 p.m. (2200 GMT) on Friday, 4 people had been safely rescued from the rubble of the building in the Janga neighborhood on the outskirts of the state capital Recife, the state civil protection secretary said.

The Pernambuco government said on social media that eight teams were sent to the site after civil defense received information about the collapse at 6:35 a.m. (0935 GMT).

It was not clear what caused the collapse. Recife, a coastal city of about 1.5 million people, has been battling heavy rains in recent days.

The city and its metropolitan area were placed under a “state of focus” on Friday, the government said, representing a “moderate to high risk”.
