Lucknow: In a major break through, the Lucknow Air Custom official arrested a 22-year-old girl student who was trying to smuggle gold worth around Rs 1.13 crore into the country. Subsequently, the yellow metal was seized and the girl student was taken into custody.
The undergraduate girl student hails from Kolkata and her father is a rice wholesale dealer. The girl was arrested by customs sleuths at Lucknow airport as she landed in Lucknow from Dubai in Indigo flight on April 13. The customs officials at the airport searched her and found that she had concealed 2,318 gm of gold valued at around Rs 1.13 crore in her underwear.
According to deputy commissioner, customs, Niharika Lakha, “The girl student was trying to smuggle 2,318 grams of gold which she had concealed in white polythene inside her underwear… It was the biggest catch from a woman passenger.”
The accused gold carrier was presented to the magistrate and sent to jail. Customs sleuths confirmed that the woman was caught for the first time in Lucknow. She was supposed to handover the gold bar to an unknown person who was waiting outside the Lucknow airport to collect the gold consignment from the arrested girl student, the report added.
