West Bengal: A horrific accident took place on National Highway-60 (NH-60) in Birbhum district of West Bengal on Tuesday night. Nine people died in an autorickshaw that collided with a State Transport Corporation bus. A senior police officer gave this information. He said the incident took place at Mallarpur near Rampurhat when the autorickshaw collided head-on with the SBSTC bus. The autorickshaw was carrying more passengers than its capacity.
The fire department and the police of Rampurhat police station reached the spot as soon as they got the information. Birbhum district superintendent of police (SP) Nagendra Nath Tripathi said eight women were passengers in the three-wheeler and the ninth victim was its driver.
He said the women were returning home from a paddy field. The SP said that their bodies have been taken to Arambagh Hospital, where the postmortem will be done.
The bus was going from Arambagh to Durgapur when it collided. Prime Minister Modi and Birbhum DM have announced compensation for this painful accident. Expressing grief over the tragic accident in a tweet, Prime Minister Modi announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each to the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured. Apart from this, the DM talked about giving Rs 2 lakh to the families of the victims.
