AAP has chosen Shelly Oberoi for the Delhi Mayor post, while for the Deputy Mayor post, the party has selected Matia Mahal, MLA Shoib Iqbal’s son, Aale Mohammad Iqbal.
New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is upbeat after winning the MCD elections. The party announced the names of its candidates for mayor and deputy mayor posts in Delhi on Friday. Shelly Oberoi has been selected for the Delhi Mayor post, while for the Deputy Mayor post, AAP has chosen Matia Mahal, MLA Shoib Iqbal’s son, Aale Mohammad Iqbal.
In the recently concluded MCD elections, Shelly Oberoi fought MCD polls for the first time from ward 86—East Patel Nagar (New Delhi).
Oberoi is 39, and by profession she is an Assistant Professor. She defeated Delhi BJP Chief Adesh Gupta on his home turf in the MCD polls. Gupta lost the elections despite his influence in the ward.
The position of mayor is not directly elected by voters; instead, a group of elected representatives chooses the mayor. These representatives not only include the newly-elected representatives but an entire college that will elect the first citizen of Delhi, i.e., the mayor.
It is expected that the mayor’s election will be held on January 6 of next year. During the mayor’s election, apart from elected councillors, 10 MPs and 14 MLAs are eligible to vote in the mayoral election. However, it is up to the Assembly Speaker to decide which MLAs to call for a ballot.
