A case against the assault of a woman emerged in Punjab, where an MLA of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Baljinder Kaur, was being targeted by her husband which was revealed in a video and went viral on social media.
The incident occurred in the MLA’s Punjab home. People were surprised to see such behaviour against a female MLA. Think about how women have to face the backlash of their opposite sex everywhere and in every segment of life.
In the video, the MLA had been engaged in a heated argument with several people who surrounded her. She got a slap from a man who was reported to be her husband.
Punjab State Commission for Women chairperson Manisha Gulati came into action regarding the issue and said, “I have seen the video of Baljinder Kaur on social media. We will take a suo motu notice of the incident. It is horrible that a woman who tries to raise public issues is herself a victim of domestic violence.
Atrocities against women are on the rampage in Punjab. As per the latest report of the NCRB, Punjab saw an increase of 17 per cent in crime against women—from 4,838 cases in 2020 to 5,662 cases in 2021. The number of rape cases in the state has also jumped. A total of 508 rape incidents took place in 2021 as against 504 in 2020, while the rape attempt cases were 60 in 2021 as against 53 in 2020. The number of cases of assault on women to outrage their modesty dropped to 688 in 2021 as against 732 in 2020 in the state.
