New Delhi: On Saturday, during a rally against the BJP, water cannons were used to scatter Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) protesters. AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar posted a video of a sizable number of protesters shouting slogans while police stood watch in the middle of barricades. The uproar was organised to oppose slum-related actions. Senior AAP leader Atishi, MLA Somnath Bharti, and Shelley Oberoi, a candidate for mayor of the MCD, all took part in the protest.
The AAP claimed on Twitter that the BJP’s Delhi Development Authority (DDA), was in the process of demolishing several slums. Notices about the destruction have now been delivered to slum residents following the end of the MCD elections. Such demolitions are occurring in localities like Kalkaji, Tughlakabad, and others. We won’t allow it to take place. “We will continue our struggle from Sadak (roads) to Sansad (Parliament).”
The AAP emerged victorious last month in the MCD polls and ended the BJP’s 15-year long reign in the Delhi civic body. The BJP government merged the three Delhi civic bodies before the elections into one Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Despite this, AAP surpassed the saffron party. The election was fought on landfill sites, the issue of slums, air pollution, and so on.
“Our slogan is to denounce the atrocities.” We are Arvind Kejriwal’s soldiers. “We won’t allow the BJP to target the slums,” said MLA Kuldeep Kumar in a tweet on Saturday. He is heard saying: “The BJP had pledged, ‘Jahan jhuggi, wahin makaan’ (where there is slum, there will be house) in a video posted by the AAP’s Delhi unit. They are now committed to demolishing these slums. “We won’t let them do this.”
