New Delhi: Fashion designer Rohit Bal is currently battling a extremely critical health condition and has been put on ventilator support in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Gurugram’s Medanta Hospital. Reports said the 62-year-old designer suffered a heart attack recently and was rushed to hospital by model Suraj Dhali.
Rohit Bal, hails from Srinagar, began his career in 1986 and is one of the most renowned and eminent fashion designers in the country. Bal studied fashion at the National Institute of Fashion Technology in Delhi has been honoured with multiple prestigious accolades, and is recognised as one of the leading names in the fashion industry.
In a career spanning more than three decades, Rohit Bal collaborated with several A-listers from Bollywood. He is said to be ahead of his time and was one of the first designers to create couture collections and also introduce a range of pret with his Fashion line Balance.
In 2006, 62-year-old Bal was conferred with Designer of the Year at the Indian Fashion Awards and Kingfisher Fashion Achievement Awards in 2001.
Renowned designer Bal, 62, was reportedly struggling with alcohol addiction and has been in and out of rehab. In November last year, Mr Bal’s condition took a turn for the worse, necessitating his immediate admission to Medanta Hospital.
“Bal was swiftly taken to the hospital by model Suraj Dhalia three days ago. His heart was sinking and he was unconscious. His pacemaker gave seven shocks. He was initially taken to Moolchand and when his condition deteriorated, he was rushed to Medanta,” a close aide of Rohit told sources.
For those unversed, Rohit Bal suffered from a heart attack for which he underwent an emergency angioplasty in 2010 when he was at the peak of his career. Reports also said he suffered from alcoholism and had been admitted to the hospital last November to flush out alcohol from his system.
The designer has carved a niche for himself and countless Bollywood celebrities have walked the ramp for him, including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit and Sonam Kapoor, among others. His works were also acknowledged in 2012 when he was named Lakme Grand Finale Designer.
