Actor Sonu Sood announces his sister’s political entry, suspense on party

Chandigarh: While actor Sonu Sood denied rumours of joining any political party, he confirmed his sister Malvika Sood Sachar was ready to serve the people of Punjab as she is all set to contest the upcoming Punjab polls, said the 48-year-old actor at a press conference in Moga, some 170 km from capital Chandigarh. However, he remained tight-lipped on the choice of party, stating that their decision will be “revealed at the right time”.

“Malvika is ready. Her commitment to serve people is unparalleled,” Sood said at a press conference at his home in Moga. He recently met with chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Sood said, adding that he was also open to meeting other political leaders, including AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal and Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal.

“But it is a big decision of life when it comes to joining a political party, it is more about ideologies not casual meetings,” he explained. “We will reveal at right time about the party.” Malvika is most likely to contest from the constituency of Moga, according to Sood – whose work during the Covid crisis has earned him rich praise.

Asked whether he, too, will be joining politics, Sood said: “First it is important to support Malvika, she is connected to our roots in Moga. I will reveal my own plans later.”

Mr Sood had recently met Punjab Chief Minister Charanjeet Singh Channi and in the past he had met Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who declared him brand ambassador for a “Desh ka Mentors” programme for school students. His meeting with Mr Kejriwal had spurred rumours of a political debut, perhaps in Punjab election as an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate.

Though he has been feted by politicians and parties, the actor has always maintained his charity has nothing to do with politics.

“No politics was discussed. As of now we have not discussed anything political,” Sonu Sood had told reporters at the time.

Talking about his sister Malvika, if elected, healthcare will be her top priority and she will ensure that patients who need dialysis get them for free, Sood said. She will also address the issue of unemployment in the state. “Youths in Punjab go to drugs only when they don’t get work, they are unemployed. We are already working on it,” he said.
