Kochi: A case of smuggling by a cabin crew of Air India has come to the fore. An Air India cabin crew was arrested at the Kochi airport on Wednesday on charges of smuggling gold, officials said. Shafi, a native of Wayanad, was arrested by the Customs officials in Kochi with 1 kg 487 grams of gold. The Customs Preventive Commissionerate had received confidential information that Shafi, a cabin crew member of the Bahrain-Kozhikode-Kochi service, was carrying gold.

Shafi had found a different way to smuggle gold, but he was caught before he could execute his plan. The accused was planning to pass through the green channel by wrapping gold in his hands and covering the sleeve of his shirt. Officials said that he is being interrogated further.

Chennai Customs said two passengers from Singapore were arrested at the Chennai airport on Wednesday for allegedly carrying 6.8 kg of gold worth Rs 3.32 crore. According to the official, Passengers-347 and 6E-52 had reached Chennai from Singapore.

In a tweet, Chennai Customs said, “Based on intelligence inputs, 2 pax AI-347 & 6E-52 from Singapore were brought to Chennai. On searching the luggage of the suspected passengers, gold was recovered weighing 6.8 kgs. Its The cost was Rs 3 crore 32 lakh. The accused were arrested and further investigation is on.”
