New Delhi: Air India’s replacement flight has left for San Francisco from Russia carrying 232 people. Due to a technical problem on Tuesday, an Air India aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing in the Russian city of Magadan.

Air India flight number AEI-173 left Delhi for San Francisco on June 6. Air India has enhanced its on-ground support at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to help passengers with their arrival formalities. An Air India flight going from Delhi to San Francisco was diverted to Magadan on Tuesday after a technical fault in one of its engines. The Boeing 777 aircraft carrying 216 passengers and 16 crew members made an emergency landing at Magadan airport. Passengers and crew were kept in temporary accommodation in the city.

Gagan, one of the stranded passengers told sources that the situation in Magadan was ‘challenging’ with lack of clarity and inadequate facilities.

“We are more than 230 people. There are children and old people too. Our bags are still on the plane. We were sent to different places by buses. Some were sent to a school and there were mattresses on the floor,” he said. Are laying. Toilet facilities are not good. Language is a barrier. The food here is very different. There is a lot of seafood and non-veg. Some people are only having bread and soup. Elderly people are unable to get medicine Is.”

Gagan appreciated the efforts of the Russian authorities despite the difficulties faced by the stranded passengers. “They’re good. We’ve been lucky, because we’re in a college hostel. We just got wi-fi about an hour ago, so we’ve been able to stay in touch with our families.”

The US State Department has confirmed that there were less than 50 US citizens on board the plane. US State Department Deputy Spokesman Vedant Patel said, “We have received information that fewer than 50 US citizens were on board that flight. We have also been told that a replacement aircraft of Air India is going to Russia to pick up the passengers.” .”

Air India said that the replacement aircraft is expected to reach San Francisco International Airport at 0015 hours (local time) on 8 June.
