Akal Takht chieftain triggers controversy over his statement Sikhs must get weapons training

Amritsar: Controversial statements by any public figure spark controversy. Akal Takht chief Giani Harpreet Singh triggered a controversy by calling for all Sikhs to take armoury training. The jathedar of the takht said Sikhs should go to weapons training academies where people will get the opportunity to learn to use state-of-the-art weapons.

The Akal Takht is one of five takhts (seats of power) of authority of the Sikhs. It is situated in the vicinity of the Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) complex in Amritsar, Punjab.

The controversial statement was given by Giani Harpreet Singh while addressing a large gathering outside the Golden Temple in Amritsar. During his address, pro-Khalistani supporters raised their slogans. The crowd also purportedly started raising their voices in favour of the release of Sikh prisoners.

Giani Harpreet Singh further added that “Sikhs never got Independence. Every attempt is being made to weaken the Sikhs in every way, such as politically, economically, and socially. The time has come for the Sikh community to make them religiously strong. The government has been trying its best to check Sikhs this time by deploying police.

The Akal Takht chief raised his finger over the rise of crime, and every religion has the right to see the safety of its people. Giani Harpreet Singh stated that “Sikhs should get state-of-the-art weapons training.” He expressed his view days after the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala.

The Union Home Ministry tried its best to provide Central Reserve Police Force Z-security cover to Giani Harpreet Singh, but he rejected the offer given to him by the home ministry.
