New Delhi: In a massive blow to the Samajwadi Party ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Aparna Yadav, daughter-in-law of former state chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, and Akhilesh Yadav’s sister-in-law joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday.
The switch by Aparna, who is married to SP chief Akhilesh Yadav’s half-brother Prateek Yadav, to the BJP comes just days after a slew of ministers and MLAs from the ruling party in the state joined the Samajwadi Party.
Aparna Yadav joined the party in the presence of BJP State president Swatantra Dev Singh and Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya.

Yadav thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP CM Yogi Adityanath after joining the party. She also said that she has always been impressed by the initiatives of the Modi-led government. Later today, Aparna is also expected to meet BJP national president JP Nadda. According to the sources, Aparna Yadav has sought a ticket from the Lucknow Cantt assembly seat.
Aparna runs an organisation — bAware — that works for women’s issues and also a shelter for cows in Lucknow. Ms Yadav has been in the news in the past for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
