Akshay Kumar on Kudo Tournament: Promoting Martial Arts on a Global Stage

Renowned actor Akshay Kumar recently hosted the 15th Akshay Kumar International Kudo Tournament in Surat, Gujarat, showcasing his enduring commitment to martial arts and fitness. The event, a testament to his passion for Kudo, aimed to provide an international platform for children, emphasizing inclusivity without financial constraints.

Having trained in Kudo during the making of “Rowdy Rathore” in 2012, Kumar recognized its efficacy in self-defense, prompting him to introduce the Japanese martial arts form to India. Over the past decade, he has organized the tournament annually, with this year featuring actor Disha Patani as a special guest.

“I wanted to provide an international platform to the children from every town and village… An international tournament where everyone can participate without worrying about money or costs, hence my tournament was started. It is absolutely free of cost for the last 15 years,” Kumar shared, highlighting the accessibility of the tournament, even during the lockdown, where it continued online.

The four-day affair serves not only as a showcase of Kudo but also as a talent scouting ground for athletes across India. Kumar notes its role in selecting participants for global competitions such as the South Asian Cup, Asian Cup, and World Cup. Two consistent winners from the Akshay Kumar Tournament are currently under 19 world champions for 2023.

Disha Patani, a martial arts enthusiast, joined Kumar at the event, emphasizing the importance of youth icons leveraging their influence to guide young individuals toward fitness and martial arts. Kumar, who himself has trained in Karate, Taekwondo, and Muay Thai, believes that martial arts instill virtues like discipline and determination, shaping both personal and professional aspects of life.

As Kumar continues to use his star power to promote Kudo and fitness, the tournament stands as a beacon for aspiring martial artists, fostering a culture of discipline, determination, and holistic well-being.
