Plum Borough Police Chief Lanny Conley said the explosion occurred at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Pittsburgh. The bodies of five people, including a child, were recovered after the blast.

Allegheny County officials said two of the three people who were hospitalized were released, while one was in serious condition.

County spokeswoman Amy Downs said emergency crews reported people were trapped under debris after one house exploded and two other houses caught fire.

Officials told reporters at the scene that they did not know how many people were in these homes at the time of the incident and therefore could not give an exact number of people inside. The cause of the explosion in the house is being ascertained.
