Amir Sarfaraz, accused of Sarabjit Singh murder, shot dead by unknown assailant in Lahore

Lahore: The man behind Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh’s killing inside Pakistan jail was on Sunday allegedly shot dead by a few unknown assailants in Lahore. The deceased has been identified as Amir Sarfaraz, who alleged to be the man involved in murder of Sarabjit Singh.

Singh, who was lodged in Kot Lakhpat Jail, died after he was attacked with bricks, sharp metal sheets, iron rods, and blades. Amir Sarfaraz was said to be behind the attack. Amir Sarfaraz was shot dead today by unknown men in Lahore.

The attack unfolded in Lahore’s Islampura area, leaving Tamba critically wounded. Police said he was swiftly rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention as forces rushed to the scene, cordoning off the area in search of the assailants.

Sarabjit Singh, a resident of Punjab, was awarded a death sentence for spying charges and killing at least 14 Pakistani citizens in bomb blasts in Punjab province in 1990, a claim vehemently refuted by his family and Indian authorities. Sarabjit Singh’s family claims that he by mistake crossed over the Indian border to Pakistan while farming.

After spending 23 years in a Pakistani jail, Sarabjit Singh died in May 2013 at a Lahore hospital following a cardiac arrest.

Sarfaraz’s involvement in the infamous attack on Sarabjit Singh, a high-profile Indian death row prisoner, adds a layer of complexity to this incident. The attack on Singh had garnered significant attention and controversy, and Sarfaraz’s subsequent injury raises questions about potential motives and connections.

In December 2018, the Lahore District and Sessions Court had acquitted Sarfaraz and co-accused Mudassar, both on death row in Kot Lakhpat Jail, of all charges in the case of the killing of Sarabjit Sindh in captivity.

The court had cited a lack of evidence as the reason for the acquittal.

Singh, 49, had died in 2013 as a result of an attack by Sarfaraz and Mudassar with bricks and iron rods. He had been found guilty of taking part in several bombings in the Pakistani Punjab in 1990, and he was given the death penalty.
