Amritsar : The Punjab Police has arrested Amritpal Singh’s mother, Balwinder Kaur, along with his uncle Sukhchain Singh and four others. This comes before a planned march seeking the shifting of ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief from Assam prison to Punjab.
They were apprehended while en route to Bathinda to participate in the Khalsa Chetna March, organized to demand the transfer of Amritpal Singh and his associates from Dibrugarh Jail in Assam to Punjab.
Amritpal Singh and his associates were arrested by Punjab Police last year and shifted to Dibrugarh Jail under the National Security Act (NSA).
The Chetna March was planned by his family and Sikh organizations, starting from Takht Damdama Sahib in Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda, and ending at Akal Takht Sahib.
Police officials confirmed the arrest and mentioned they were sent to judicial custody for four days.
The Bathinda administration had not granted permission for the march, citing concerns of potential law and order issues.
Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee condemned the arrests, calling it a violation of human rights.
Senior Akali leader Virsa Singh Valtoha also condemned the detention.
Balwinder Kaur and relatives of other ‘Waris Punjab De’ members had been on a hunger strike near the Golden Temple in Amritsar since February 22.
They vowed to continue their fast until their demand to move Amritpal Singh and the detainees to a Punjab jail was met.
The situation remains tense as the march organizers face legal consequences for their planned protest. The arrests have sparked condemnation from various Sikh leaders and organizations, highlighting the ongoing debate surrounding the rights of detainees and the handling of cases related to separatist movements.
