Chandigarh: Polling for the presidential election is underway with 776 Members of Parliament and 4,033 MLAs in the poll fray to elect the 15th President of India. Meanwhile, an Akali Dal MLA has taken his own decision and is not ready with the party’s decision to favour NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu.
In a Facebook video, Akali Dal MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali revealed that he is going to boycott the election and won’t vote for either Draupadi Murmu or Yashwant Sinha, the two presidential candidates.
Mr Ayali says there is no question of voting for the Congress candidate because they were responsible for the 1984 Sikh genocide, known as Operation Bluestar. “I don’t have any faith in Congress to determine the issues of Punjab,” he said.
He added that he had hoped for the saffron party. But the party has not resolved Punjab’s issue since the coming of power in the centre. “I don’t know if it’s selfishness or something else,” he added.
On the BJP candidate, Draupadi Murmu, Mr Ayali said the BJP had not contacted the Sikh community before the nomination. He also raised questions over the Akali leaders’ support for the ruling party’s candidate.
The Union government has failed to resolve the issues of Punjab, including the release of Sikh prisoners, Punjab’s rights over Chandigarh, and the issue of the Satluj Yamuna Link Canal, “he added.
Due to the sentiments of the Sikh community and several other issues, I will not take part in the voting for the presidential polls today.
The Akali Dal has been supporting the NDA candidate, Draupadi Murmu. The party has just three MLAs in the current state assembly and two MPs in the Lok Sabha.
