A total of 22 sets of nominations were filed by YSRCP leaders on behalf of Jagan Mohan Reddy on Friday. No other leader has filed nomination for the post. Jagan Mohan Reddy formed the YSRCP in March 2011 by breaking ties with the Congress. Since the formation of his party, he has held the position of party president, while his mother Vijayamma has served as the honorary president.
On Friday, Vijayamma resigned from the post of honorary president due to the ongoing rift in the Reddy family. However, she said that she is leaving the party to stand beside her daughter Sharmila, who is now the head of the YSR Telangana Party.
Vijayamma on Friday said that she was with Jagan Mohan Reddy when he was in trouble and should now support his daughter. Vijayamma had said at the party’s national convention, “I am thinking of parting ways with this party. Sharmila is fighting alone. My heart tells me that as Rajasekhara Reddy’s wife and Sharmila’s mother, I have to stand by her.” Assembly elections will be held in Telangana in 2023. Vijayamma’s remarks indicated that Sharmila would get the party’s full support in the assembly elections.
