The incident took place 500 meters from a crossroads where right-wing group Bajrang Dal held a meeting where they claimed that the Muslims of the area were trying to convert a Hindu girl in their locality. The attack reportedly happened just after the meeting.

In a statement, the Kanpur Police said that they have registered a case of rioting against a local, his son and around 10 unidentified persons, who run a wedding band, on the basis of a complaint by the man who assaulted him.
The police have not said if the men named in the case are affiliated to the organisation.

The man is a relative of a Muslim family in the locality that is involved in a legal dispute with their Hindu neighbors. The Kanpur police statement says in July, the two families filed cases against each other at the local police station.

The Muslim side had earlier lodged an FIR of assault and criminal intimidation. The Hindu side then filed a case alleging “assault with intent to outrage the modesty of a woman”.

Sources say the Bajrang Dal recently got involved in the matter and they had been making allegations of forcible conversion against the Muslim family.

Raveena Tyagi, a senior police officer from Kanpur, said in a brief statement, “We have seen a video of a man being assaulted. Based on the complaint of the victim, we have registered an FIR and we are following the legal process.”
