New Delhi: After the debacle in the just concluded Asia Cup T-20 tournament held in the UAE, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 15-man strong squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, scheduled to be played in Australia from next month. Rohit Sharma will have to lead from the front to lift the World Cup again. Remember, India ousted Pakistan and won the inaugural T-20 World Cup in 2007, under the captaincy of Dhoni.

India is set to start its proceedings in the Super 12 stages of the tournament against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 23 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

The opening slots are fixed, that is, captain Rohit Sharma and his deputy KL Rahul. Former skipper Virat Kohli will bat at his usual position at No.3 after scoring a much-needed century against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup 2022. Suryakumar Yadav has to bat at No. 4, where his success rate is high in the shortest format of the game.

Hardik Pandya, the team’s backbone, is a perfect batter at No. 5. His contribution would be critical to India’s success in capturing a second World T20 title. Veteran Dinesh Karthik may be included in the final eleven for his finishing ability. He will take up the finishing role at No.6.

The ever-consistent Jasprit Bumrah returned to the side. His presence will make a significant difference. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh would be potent on the Australian pitches. The spin department will be in the hands of Yuzvendra Chahal, Ashwin, and Axar Patel.

The notable missing in the side is allrounder R Jadeja.

At least on paper, the Indian squad is well balanced and ready to perform better and wipe out the Asia Cup disappointment.
