Howrah: As per the police, West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar was detained on Saturday afternoon while he was trying to reach violence-hit Howrah district. Violence in Howrah district took place amid the Prophet row.
Police arrested Majumdar, the MP of Balurghat in Uttar Dinajpur, near the toll plaza on Vidyasagar while he was trying to travel to Howrah, where prohibitory orders under CrPC 144 have been clamped. He was placed under house arrest.
Protests started in several parts of Howrah district on Friday against the derogatory remarks given by two BJP leaders, Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal. Prohibitory orders were imposed to stop violence and any other untoward incidents.
The widespread protest came just days after Gulf nations such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Kuwait strongly condemned the remarks about Prophet Mohammad.
Senior TMC leader and MLA Tapas Ray alleged that the intention of Majumdar’s visit was to fan communal tension. “The police did the right thing by stopping him,” he said.
Internet services have been suspended in the district till June 13
