Bhattacharya is an MLA from Palashipara in Nadia district and a former chairman of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. Bhattacharya is the second high-profile TMC MLA to be arrested after Partha Chatterjee in connection with the teachers’ recruitment scam.

Let us tell you that on September 19 last month, the ED attached assets worth Rs 48.22 crore of former minister Partha Chatterjee and his alleged aide Arpita Mukherjee in connection with the money laundering probe in the West Bengal teacher recruitment scam.

The ED also filed its first chargesheet in the case in a special court in Kolkata in which it has named Chatterjee and Mukherjee and six companies as accused. The attached properties included 40 immovable properties, including a farmhouse, several flats and land in Kolkata worth Rs 40.33 crore, the agency said in a statement. Apart from this, an amount of Rs 7.89 crore deposited in 35 bank accounts has also been attached, it said.

Chatterjee, a former minister in the Trinamool Congress-led government in West Bengal, and his “close assistant” were arrested by the ED in July. At present, Partha Chatterjee is in the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for questioning in connection with the alleged scam, while Mukherjee is lodged in jail. Partha Chatterjee was removed from the post of minister by the Mamata Banerjee government after his arrest. He was also removed from other posts of the party, including the post of General Secretary of Trinamool Congress.
