PM Modi had previously announced in February that Advani would receive the Bharat Ratna, acknowledging his monumental contribution to India’s progress. Born in Karachi in 1927, Advani played a pivotal role in shaping the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), serving as its president for a significant period since its establishment in 1980.

During his illustrious career, Advani held esteemed positions such as Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He is revered for his intellectual prowess, unwavering principles, and steadfast commitment to India’s prosperity.

Advani’s leadership was instrumental in propelling the BJP from obscurity to prominence, particularly through his historic Rath Yatra in the 1990s. His parliamentary journey spanned nearly three decades, during which he championed the party’s cause and served as a beacon of nationalism.

Educationally, Advani graduated from DG National College in Hyderabad before pursuing law at the Government Law College in Mumbai. His association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) dates back to 1947, and he played a pivotal role in the formation of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), the political arm of the RSS.

Advani’s ministerial tenure was marked by significant reforms, including the abolition of press censorship and the repeal of anti-press legislation enacted during the Emergency. He tirelessly advocated for media freedom and transparency.

Despite the political upheavals, Advani’s dedication to national service remained unwavering. His leadership, especially during challenging times, earned him admiration and respect across the political spectrum.

On February 3, 2024, the Narendra Modi government announced the well-deserved recognition of Advani’s contributions with the Bharat Ratna, honoring his exceptional service to the nation.
