Congress may get a big setback in Goa. Eight Goa Congress MLAs, including former chief minister Digambar Kamat, are likely to join the BJP Wednesday. BJP state party chief Sadanand Shet Tanavade confirmed.
Goa: Congress may get a big setback in Goa. Eight Congress MLAs in Goa are set to join the ruling BJP, the state’s BJP unit chief Sadanand Shet Tanavade said on Wednesday. The 8 Congress MLAs include Digambar Kamat, Michael Lobo, Delilah Lobo, Rajesh Phaldesai, Kedar Naik, Sankalp Amonkar, Aleixo Sequeira & Rudolf Fernandes; They also met with CM Pramod Sawant, according to the report.
Goa BJP state has made this claim at a time when Congress is taking out ‘Congress Jodo Yatra’ to get back its lost land across the country. Under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, Congress leaders are taking a 150-day journey of 3570 km across the country. This journey will pass through 12 states.
Assembly elections were held in Goa with 40 assembly seats in February this year. Out of this, BJP Alliance (NDA) has 25 MLAs. At the same time, Congress has 11 MLAs. But the state president of BJP has claimed that 8 out of 11 MLAs will join his party.
This is the second time that such discussions are taking place in Goa after the formation of the government in March. Earlier in July, there was talk of 5 out of 11 Congress MLAs switching sides to join the BJP. However, Congress stopped this rebellion by showing activism at the right time.
At that time there was talk of Congress MLAs Digambar Kamat, Michael Lobo, Rajesh Faldesai, Kedar Naik and Delilah Lobo being rebels. However, Congress removed Michael Lobo from the post of Leader of Opposition for his involvement in anti-party activities.
This is not the first time that the Congress has suffered such a major setback in Goa. Earlier, Congress had won 17 seats in Goa in the last assembly elections i.e. 2017. But despite having 13 seats, the BJP was successful in forming a coalition government. In 2019, the Congress suffered a major setback, when 10 MLAs of the party joined the BJP. After this 2 more MLAs joined BJP.
