Surat: Rahul Gandhi has been convicted by the District Court of Surat, Gujarat in a criminal defamation case filed in 2019 with ‘Modi surname’. This matter is related to the comment given by Rahul Gandhi regarding ‘Modi surname’. The case against Rahul has been registered over his remark in which he had allegedly said, “Why all thieves have the same surname as Modi?” Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was present in the Surat District Court when the verdict was pronounced in this case. Earlier, he had said that whatever punishment someone gives him, he will accept it.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was found guilty in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surname by a court in Gujarat’s Surat.

A petition was filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi against Rahul’s controversial statement. Rahul, a Lok Sabha member from Wayanad, made the above remarks at a public meeting held in Kolar, Karnataka before the 2019 general elections.

Rahul Gandhi’s lawyer Kirit Panwala told that the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Verma had last week heard the arguments of both the parties and fixed the date of March 23 for pronouncement of the verdict.
