The incident was caught on camera. The video shows a man taking rapid steps towards the stage as he tries to hit the chief minister. However, he was immediately dragged away by the CM’s security personnel.

Footage from CCTV cameras showed the attack taking place as the Chief Minister was about to pay his respects to the statue of Shilbhadra Yaji, a noted freedom fighter from the state, at the local Safar hospital complex.

The accused has been identified as Shankar alias Chhotu, 25, a resident of Mohammadpur area in Bakhtiyarpur. He runs a small jewellery shop in the area.

The preliminary investigation by the Patna Police indicates the man is mentally unstable. Sources said he was mostly kept confined at home by his family. He managed to sneak out today as most of the male members of the family were out.

These days, the Chief Minister is touring different segments of his old Lok Sabha constituency Barh as part of a public relations exercise. Mr Kumar was elected five times from Barh, from 1989 to 1999.

Mr Kumar was talking about jobs at a rally in Harlakhi, when the onions were hurled from the crowd. The pungent missiles went awry as his security personnel rushed to form a protective shield around him. “Khub feko, khub feko, khube feko (keep throwing),” the Chief Minister, furious, said.
