Footage from CCTV cameras showed the attack taking place as the Chief Minister was about to pay his respects to the statue of Shilbhadra Yaji, a noted freedom fighter from the state, at the local Safar hospital complex.

The accused has been identified as Shankar alias Chhotu, 25, a resident of Mohammadpur area in Bakhtiyarpur. He runs a small jewellery shop in the area.

The preliminary investigation by the Patna Police indicates the man is mentally unstable. Sources said he was mostly kept confined at home by his family. He managed to sneak out today as most of the male members of the family were out.
