Newly-elected Member of Parliament (MP) Rajesh Ranjan, also known as Pappu Yadav, has been accused of trying to extort Rs 1 crore from a businessman in Bihar. The police have registered a case based on these allegations.
According to the police in Purnia district, Yadav called the businessman, who runs a furnishing business, to his home on June 4, the day votes were counted. Yadav reportedly demanded Rs 1 crore and threatened to kill the businessman if he didn’t pay. The businessman also claimed that Yadav had made similar threats in 2021 and 2023, warning him he would have to deal with Yadav for the next five years if he refused.
The police have filed a case against Pappu Yadav and his aide Amit Yadav at the Mofussil police station. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Pappu Yadav, who has a reputation for using tough tactics, won the Purnia seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He defeated the JD(U) candidate Santosh Kushwaha by 23,847 votes. Yadav, married to Congress Rajya Sabha MP Ranjit Ranjan, had merged his Jan Adhikar Party with Congress before the elections but ran as an Independent because Congress didn’t want to compete with its ally RJD.
RJD candidate Bima Bharti, who left JD(U) and gave up her state assembly seat, finished third and lost her deposit. Yadav received over 5.67 lakh votes, while Kushwaha got 5.43 lakh votes. Bharti managed only 27,120 votes.
This case has attracted a lot of attention, highlighting the political tensions and controversies surrounding Pappu Yadav in Bihar.
