Bihar: Stone pelting between two communities in Bhagalpur over Saraswati idol immersion

Bhagalpur: In Darbhanga, Bihar, a procession carried the iconic idol of Maa Saraswati through the streets, marking the conclusion of Vasant Panchami festival. The peaceful procession aimed at immersing the idol of the goddess turned into a scene of chaos and violence when it was attacked by a group of Islamic fundamentalists.

A clash broke out between two groups allegedly leading to stone pelting in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district on Friday. The incident unfolded in Lodipur village of Bhagalpur. The incident, a stark manifestation of religious intolerance, resulted in numerous injuries and the destruction of the sacred murti, shaking the core of Darbhanga’s communal harmony.

This attack was not a random skirmish but a well-planned conspiracy. Investigation revealed that the attackers were part of a WhatsApp group named ‘Islam Zindabad’, pointing to a planned attack against the Hindu procession.

A quick police response led to the arrest of fourteen individuals, with evidence showing that the attack included acid attacks, stone pelting and widespread vandalism. Due to this carefully orchestrated violence, a case has been registered against 61 identified persons and 7 mobile numbers on various charges related to communal violence and obstruction of justice.

Recently, a similar incident was reported in Bihar’s Darbhanga district. On the same day, similar clashes broke out during another Saraswati idol immersion procession in Bhagalpur, Bihar. In both incidents, stones were pelted at processions, leading to clashes between the two communities. The local administration and police controlled the situation in both the cases, but the scars of these clashes have left a scar on the social fabric of Bihar.
