Bihar tragedy: On Chhath Puja, 53 people drowned in different parts of the state, CM announces ex-gratia of ₹4 lakh each

Patna: 53 People have died in various accidents including drowning during Chhath Puja in Bihar. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed deep grief over the death of people during Chhath Puja and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. The Disaster Response Force confirmed the tragic death of pilgrims drowned in several rivers in Bihar. The Nitish Kumar government has already announced financial assistance to the families of the deceased.

According to the Bihar Disaster Management Department, on October 30 and 31, 21 people died due to drowning while taking bath at various Chhath Ghats of the state. Three each in Muzaffarpur and Samastipur, two each in Bhagalpur and Rohtas and one each in Kaimur, Katihar, Madhepura, Nawada, Sitamarhi, Vaishali, Saharsa, Katihar, Patna and Madhepura districts due to drowning during bathing at Chhath Ghats. And one person has died after being struck by lightning at Chhath Ghat in Araria.

According to the department, between 29 and 31 October, 32 people died in other accidents on the river, canal, pond, pond and Chhath Ghat. Of these 32 people, five each died in Patna and Purnia, four in Saharsa, three in Samastipur, two each in Khagadia, Bhagalpur and Gaya, one each in Gaya, Begusarai, Buxar, Katihar, Aurangabad, Sheohar, Banka, Supaul and Kaimur. – One person has died.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has expressed grief over the death of 53 people in the state during the festival. He also announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh to the families of the deceased. Nitish Kumar directed the district magistrates to quickly identify the dead and provide compensation to the families.
