New Delhi: Gangrape case victim Bilkis Bano on Wednesday approached the Supreme Court challenging the premature release of 11 convicts who were convicted of gangrape and murder of their family members during the 2002 Godhra riots. Bilkis Bano also filed a review petition challenging the May order of the Supreme Court allowing the Gujarat government to apply for the 1992 exemption policy.
The matter was mentioned before Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud for listing. The CJI said that he would decide whether both the petitions could be heard together and before the same bench.
These eleven convicts, who were serving life sentence in the gangrape case, had appealed to the Gujarat government for their release. His application was approved by a Gujarat government panel. After which he was released from Godhra sub-jail on 15 August.
After one of the convicts, Radheshyam Shah, went to the Supreme Court, the Gujarat government had released the convicts under the policy of premature release. Shah was sentenced to life imprisonment by a CBI court in Mumbai in 2008 and had spent 15 years and four months in jail. In May this year, the Supreme Court had directed the Gujarat government to decide within two months whether Shah should be pardoned or not.
