New Delhi: The moment the rapists of Bilkis Bano were allowed to leave the Godhra sub-jail under the Gujarat government’s remission policy, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi told PM Modi, the entire country is observing the difference between what he said, what he claimed, and what he actually did.

He took to Twitter and wrote, “Those who raped a 5-month pregnant woman and killed her 3-year-old girl were released during the ‘Azadi Ke Amrit Mahotsav’.” What message is being conveyed to the women of the country who advocate for women’s empowerment ? ” “Prime Minister, the nation can now clearly see the discrepancy between your words and actions.”

On Monday, eleven accused who had been given life sentences for the 2002 post-Godhra gang rape and murder of seven members of Bilkis Bano’s family walked out of the Godhra sub-jail after the Gujarat government approved their release under its policy of remission.

Rahul Gandhi, the Congress MP, was alluding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day speech to the nation, delivered for the ninth time from the historical Red Fort ramparts, in which he called for a change in people’s attitudes towards women and urged them to respect them.

On similar lines, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi questioned the release of the convicts in the Bilkis Bano case and asked, “Is it not the height of injustice and insensitivity?”

She took to Twitter to write, “The release by the BJP government of the criminals who were convicted by all the courts for the crime of gang-rape and murder of a pregnant woman, welcome in front of the camera-is it not the height of injustice and insensitivity? @narendramodi Respect for women only for speeches? Women are asking.”
