Raipur: Tension took place in Chhattisgarh’s Durg when BJP and Congress workers fought over the unveiling of a statue of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his 98th birth anniversary on Sunday.
The brawl got underway when Durg BJP MP Vijay Baghel reached the Atal Smriti Garden in Camp 2 area in Bhilai to unveil the statue, and at the same time several Congress members arrived and started protesting against the event. They were saying that there is no permission from the state government to unveil the statue.
Baghel stated that the garden had been owned by Bhilai Steel Plant since 2018 and that a no-objection certificate from the Central PSU had been obtained but not from the district collector. The congress workers argued, “How can the unveiling of the statue take place?”
However, “police reached on the spot and controlled the situation, keeping the statue in a safe place, and the garden was sealed in the presence of the sub-divisional magistrate,” Superintendent of Police Abhishek Pallava was quoted as saying by a new agency.
In the area where the garden is located, Section 145 of the Indian Penal Code has been imposed.
No case has been lodged so far regarding the tussle between the two political parties, but police personnel have been deployed near the garden to stop any untoward incidents.
