New Delhi: According to a press release issued by the BJP, the party’s national president Jagat Prakash Nadda has appointed Sunil Bansal as the National General Secretary. Along with this, Sunil Bansal has been given the responsibility as the state in-charge in West Bengal, Odisha and Telangana. This appointment will come into force with immediate effect.
Sunil Bansal, former national co-organization minister of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, was appointed as the organization general secretary of BJP in Uttar Pradesh in the year 2014. In place of Bansal, the party has entrusted the responsibility of organization general secretary in Uttar Pradesh to Dharampal ji, who is handling the responsibility of organization general secretary of BJP in Jharkhand.
Bansal, who is counted among the party’s chief strategists, played a key role in scripting the party’s spectacular victory in 2017 that propelled Yogi Adityanath as Uttar Pradesh chief minister, and then in 2022 when the BJP retained power in the state.
Bansal will take charge of West Bengal from Kailash Vijayvargiya, who is also a national general secretary. He has also been given charge of Telangana where the BJP is aggressively preparing for the 2023 assembly polls.
Bansal was brought to the BJP UP unit to assist Union Home Minister Amit Shah ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Before that, he was a pracharak with the RSS and worked with its students’ wing ABVP as well. Considered close to Amit Shah, Bansal proved himself, with the BJP winning 71 of the state’s 80 Lok Sabha seats in 2014 and sweeping the Assembly elections in 2017.
Subsequently, the BJP won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections defeating the grand alliance of the SP-BSP-RLD in UP. It also retained power in the state by clinching the 2022 Assembly polls. In between, the party has also won a series of the Rajya Sabha and the Legislative Council elections in the state.
