BJP Protesters Clash with Police in Basirhat After Sandeshkhali Incident

Kolkata : Following the recent turmoil in Sandeshkhali, Bengal, a wave of violence swept through another part of the state as BJP workers clashed with the police in Basirhat. Led by state chief Sukanta Majumdar, the protesters were stopped from holding a demonstration, leading to a confrontation with law enforcement. Stones were thrown at the police, resulting in injuries to several officers.

Sequence of Events

Sukanta Majumdar, anticipating police blockades, had taken a local train to reach Basirhat, where prohibitory orders against large gatherings were in place. As the police attempted to disperse the protesters using lathicharge and tear gas, the clash escalated with the demonstrators retaliating by pelting stones. The clash unfolded outside the office of the local Superintendent of Police.

Majumdar accused the police of initiating the lathicharge without provocation, claiming that tear gas shells were used on BJP workers after they were arrested. He demanded the release of the detained party workers and initiated a sit-in protest at the spot.

Police Version

Senior police officer Sumit Kumar stated that the use of batons and tear gas was in response to the stone-pelting by the protesters to protect lives. He confirmed arrests had been made in connection with the violence.

Sandeshkhali Background

The Sandeshkhali incident, involving allegations of sexual exploitation by a local Trinamool strongman and his aides, has triggered a significant political storm. The Trinamool accused the BJP of instigating violence and provoking unrest.

Trinamool’s Response

The Trinamool asserted that BJP leaders, at the instigation of Union Minister Smriti Irani, pelted stones at the police. The party accused the BJP of hypocrisy regarding women’s security, citing the violent actions of its workers. Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh claimed that the situation in Sandeshkhali is now peaceful and under control.

Accusations Against Left Front

The Trinamool also accused the Left Front of collaborating with the BJP to create fresh provocation. Trinamool leader Partha Bhowmick dismissed the violence as an isolated incident in one area of Sandeshkhali, asserting that the situation was being exaggerated to suggest widespread unrest in the entire region.
