Waheeda Rahman: Veteran Bollywood actress Waheeda Rehman will be conferred with the India's highest honor Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur has announced this.
New Delhi: Legendary actress Waheeda Rehman, who left an indelible mark in Hindi cinema with her acting, has been selected for Indian cinema’s highest honor, Dadasaheb Phalke. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur took to X (formerly Twitter) to share this information. He has told that Waheeda Rehman will be awarded ‘Dada Saheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement’ this year. Waheeda Rehman is one of the veteran actresses of Hindi cinema. she is known for her strong acting in films like Guide, Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool and Chaudhvin Ka Chand.
85-Year-old, who ruled the Indian cinema during the 1960s and 70s with her acting skills, has been named as the recipient of the prestigious award. She worked on silver screen with many big actors of Hindi cinema including Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor, Rajkumar, Manoj Kumar and Sunil Dutt. Waheeda Rehman was born on 3 February 1938 in Chennai and entered the Telugu industry in 1955.
After this, she got her first break in Hindi cinema in 1956 from the film CID. Although Waheeda Rehman played a negative role in this film, her role was very much liked. During this time, the fans also liked the pairing of Waheeda and Guru Dutt very much. She worked with him in films like Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Chaudhavin Ka Chand, Sahib Biwi and Ghulam.
Regarded as one of Hindi cinema’s finest actresses, her accolades include a National Film Award and three Filmfare Awards. Rehman was honoured with the Padma Shri by Government of India in 1972, later receiving the Padma Bhushan in 2011.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest film honour, is a recognition given by the government to individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to the world of Indian cinema.
